The Gempei Wars ranges, released over the autumn and winter 2003/4, and were to start what is now our Medieval Asia section. The Gempei War is followed by a Mongol invasion which gave us room to expand the range in the organic way that we had started on the U-M thread. Steve has a long term interest in the period and was keen to bring out the miniatures for this forgotten Wargames period.
Also the Mongols are one of the classic Wargames armies and needed little or no introduction or promotion from us.
As Seth started work on the Samurai, Steve and I looked around for other sculptors.
The person who complemented our style best was someone who I had work along side at Wargames Foundry. Will Hannah, had sculpted a fantastic group of Pirate minis, for the other Nottingham based firm and was available to do a little for us. It was planned that he would supplement Seth on the U-M thread whilst starting to build something separate of his own, the Renaissance Range was born.
Also, at this point we finally managed to secure the services of the man who had started mine and Steve’s partnership, Nick Collier had been working for I-kor but was looking for a way out of Fantasy/Sci-fi miniatures. We needed a fourth thread to complete our expansion and were able to tempt Nick in to start our WWII range.
“Serious TAG”, dictated a change in the way that we sold and distributed our miniatures. Up until September 04 we had sold everything out through mail-order. Apart from those minis sold at Salute and a few we had left in a local shop, everything had gone out in the post. Packed in 50mm square plain-board boxes, Orders were filled with straw, sealed with brown paper and string and for the first nine months, minis had gone to people who I had come to know in person.
From September 2004 our miniatures would be sold through Northstar Trade Distribution to shops and at Wargames conventions. The minis were going to go to a much larger audience than the loyal band of mail-order customers. It was an odd feeling to see our miniatures sold in such a large scale, it removed the personal contact I liked with the gamers and collectors that bought our minis…
But, I was proud to see them go, packed in the black card and made to measure boxes. |
