Wars of Religion, (Western Europe 1610 -1660)
by pete - Friday, June 29th, 2012

Field of Glory Renaissance Army list Book one deals with Western Europe 1610 -1660, which is broadly the wars know as the Thirty Years War and the wars on the British Isles commonly called the English Civil War, plus other minor associated conflicts.

This is a period that we have covered fairly well, our TYW ‘Germans’ are suitable for most of the armies given above but to add flavour gamers need to choose Command groups and clothing styles that represent their army choices best. This is a period of civilian clothing being worn on the battlefield, with Mercenary Colonels buying cloth to equip their units, from local sources, so to say that a man is a ‘Swede’ and dressed in ‘Swedish style’ is a bit of a misnomer, a man hired in Sweden to fight for Gustavus, might look like our like our Swedish miniatures, but once he arrived on campaign and survived a battle or two, he may or not get  re-equipped, in local cloth, and local style, so a great deal of variance may occur from man to man, unit to unit and over periods of time.

Mounted troops in this period come in one of two major distinct types; Firstly the lightest open-order unarmoured Harquebusiers or Carabins, attached in small numbers to large units of more aggressive cavalry types, their task was to support and ‘fire-in’ the charges of the main units. Those main units were in this period heavily armed shock cavalry, either Cuirassiers, in head to toe 'proofed' armour or lesser types in partial armour. All would be equipped with a sword at least one pistol and possibly a carbine-type harquebus.

These are the Armies covered; (click through for full details)
